Who are the people who study and work at TU Delft? We meet them in Humans of TU Delft where they talk about their work or other activities. He came to Delft from Nanjing, China to do a master’s in construction management and engineering. But Zhipeng (Zippo) Guo has developed much more than engineering knowledge during his time here.
Zhipeng Guo: “I have met many nice magicians here.”
“Since I was a kid I have loved magic. In 2009 there was a famous magician named Lu Chen who performed in the spring gala, which is the biggest TV show in China for the Chinese New Year. Billions of people watched the show and from that a lot of people started to be interested in magic, including me.
I started learning by self-study and books in high school. I even used to practice during class. The funny thing is that after I learned magic I started doing better in my studies. I used to do only close-up magic, but then in college there was a magic club and I learned more about stage performance. +
‘I combine dance popping with magic’
When I came to Delft I just hoped to study and travel, but then I found a really good place to do magic here. I have met many nice magicians here and now I’m developing an act based on an idea I had about emojis. My style is very unique because I combine dance popping with magic. This year there is a world championship in Korea and I hope to compete there.
I’m working on my thesis now and I have found that the process is similar to creating a magic act. With a thesis you need a topic and you also need an idea for the act. The structure for your paper is like the storyline of the show. You have to do lots of literature research, just like learning all types of magic techniques. But for the final thesis, as a performance, you only use a bit of it.”
