Where are the TEDxDelft speakers now…Sabine Roeser

In 2011 TU Delft Professor Sabine Roeser graced the TEDxDelft stage and gave a talk about the importance of emotion for the ethical evaluation of risky technologies, as well as their potential to develop better technology.

We spoke to her about what she has been doing since TEDxDelft to help make our technology more responsible.

In this series we will be talking to past TEDxDelft speakers from TU Delft to find out, ‘Where are they now?’ TEDxDelft conferences are held once a year and often feature a number of TU Delft faculty, staff and students. You can watch their TEDxDelft talks on their website.

Are there any stand-out speakers you remember from 2011?

I really enjoyed the talk by Leo Kouwenhoven. I also remember a great talk by artist Theo Janssen about his sculptures that move on the beach. And I really liked the talk of Felienne Hermans on spreadsheets. But of course everyone was really good, and there was such a variety of topics.

What major projects have you completed, since speaking at TEDxDelft?

I did my talk in November of 2011, and I became full professor at TU Delft three months after that. I am really pleased with my publications since then and new research grants and my public outreach activities, most of which on risk and emotion. I am now also the head of the philosophy department at TU Delft.

Did TEDxDelft in any way benefit you and you work?

Yes, it has been a really great platform for my work, of course. I’m embarrassed to say that I didn’t know what TEDx was when I was invited to speak. It wasn’t until after that I realized how big it was. The talk and resulting video are like a business card that tells people in eighteen minutes what my work is all about.
