Be the BEST in Delft

Are you a TU Delft student and do you like engineering competitions? Then sign up for the case study competition organized by the Board of European Students of Technology (BEST) in Delft.

BEST is a non-profit and non-political student organisation with 94 local groups in 32 countries. The main aim of BEST is to link students, companies and universities all over Europe via courses, engineering competitions, study trips, cultural exchanges and other local and international events.

One of those events is the European BEST engineering competition in which teams of four students compete in two categories, team design and case studies.

This year the local case study competition will be held on February 22 in the TU Delft library, with a case provided by the Dutch research organisation TNO. The winning team can compete in the regional round in Belgium on April 8th – 12th, and finally in the European finals in Warsaw, Poland, this summer. Part of the travel costs will be reimbursed and accommodation and food are free of charge.

The topic of the case study will not be disclosed beforehand, so it is advised to select a team as multidisciplinary as possible. The deadline for signing up is February 15th. You can sign up as a team or as an individual, if you cannot find a team.

In 2009, Delft students started a local BEST group, which was officially recognised as a full member in December 2009. Today, 27 participate in the group. “We would like to have members who are active for at least two years,” says Tunmise Odediran from local BEST group Delft. “Otherwise our group would have a high turnover rate and we do not want that.”

Although membership is free, the group is having difficulty getting new members. “It is hard to attract Dutch students because we have to compete with many other student associations. Moreover, we mostly speak English. International students are hard to reach because they are not as much members of student associations because of high fees,” says Odediran.
