Alarming delay

Almost half of all students from outside the European Union (EU) must face long delays before being allowed to study in the Netherlands, according to Nuffic.

Nuffic (Netherlands Organisation for International Cooperation in Higher Education) finds it ‘alarming’ that students and researchers from outside the EU face ‘structural delays’ in applying for resident permits. It can take nine months before Dutch embassies outside of the EU deal with a student’s request for a Dutch residence permit, while, officially, this should only take three weeks.

According to Nuffic, Dutch Embassies in Suriname, China, Eastern Europe and some African countries don’t do their job properly. They aren’t nice to applicants, provide the wrong information or demand more requirements than necessary. Further, it’s absurd that Dutch Immigration & Naturalisation department rules – like how large scholarships must be to qualify for permits – differ between Dutch cities.
