‘Housing of foreign students must improve’Foreign students who are to follow regular courses in Dutch at TU Delft should receive housing when they arrive in the Netherlands, just like exchange students and MSc students, says Sander Elvik, an Aag party member in the student council.

The student council will address this issue next week during a meeting with the executive board. According to Aag there are several possibilities for housing foreign students, like temporary dorm housing in a vacant factory, youth hostels or caravans. Dutch students could also be encouraged to rent their rooms to foreign students when they themselves are abroad.

“It doesn’t have to be fancy housing, the most important thing is that students don’t have to worry about a place to sleep on arrival here,” Elvik says. “Looking for housing is not easy when you’ve just arrived in a country, you’re just starting your Dutch classes and you know very little about the culture.” During their internal meeting, the student council also criticised the housing of Erasmus students in the southern part of Delft. Students housed there must pay too much rent for rooms that are too small and in a too remote part of town, according to Jan-Mark Vorstenbosch, of the Oras party.

Universities and employees disagree about collective labour agreement

Universities want to make major changes in the next collective labour agreement, compared to the current agreement. They no longer want to guarantee their employees a lifetime position and they want employee salaries to be performance-based. However, the trade unions disagree, believing that this will not benefit university employees. The trade unions are even contemplating a strike.
