Food for Brains: La Familia

Some of you may have heard of The Fellowship, the building at the southern edge of our campus. The only cool thing about it used to be its (exceedingly) epic name but this has now changed.

Sitting behind the glass wall, you can enjoy the early autumn sunshine without the need for a scarf while having lunch at one of the three new caterers.

In the middle, with its modern and appealing design, is La Familia which, as its name suggests, focuses on Italian specialties. You can choose between varying sandwiches, pizzas, ravioli and risotto while the sweet side of the counter displays some very appetising muffins and cheesecakes.

The pizzas pleasantly surprised me! Although they are still pricy for the average student budget, they do taste very good. The vegetarian option is covered with cheese, bell peppers, eggplant and dried herbs, where olives provide the acidic hint to make them really stand out. For the meaty version, it is the crispy slices of Spianata Romana that do the trick. The only thing lacking is a more crispy crust.

I can’t comment on the quality of the ravioli and risotto but by the look of the plates and the “Is this all?!” face of people ordering, it is obvious that portions are small.

The last thing I tried was a meat sandwich. The traditional focaccia bread garnished with pesto, sundried tomatoes and the same salami as on the pizza was okay. Too bad the bottom bread slice was soaked with olive oil. Be careful to wash your hands afterwards or your afternoon course notes might end up translucent.
