Engineering Outside of the Box

Have you ever wondered how your work as an engineer impacts our society? That is the very question that led to the founding of VOX Delft.

As stated on their website, VOX hopes to inspire students to be “engineers geared not solely towards the market, but towards fulfillment in life, cooperation, openness, service to others, the creation of truly sustainable and beautiful products, and the mutual enrichment of all life on this planet.”

The name VOX comes from the Latin word for “voice” and that is exactly what this fledgling student organization wants to offer its members. Founded a little more than a year ago, the ambition of VOX Delft is simply to be conscious engineers. With support from Studium Generale (SG), the organization aims to be open-minded, ethically and environmentally concerned.

According to Stephan Hooft, the chairman and co-founder, VOX strives to create a multi-disciplinary forum to discuss ideas outside of normal curriculum. They do this by organizing lectures, workshops, excursions, and discussions, but also by encouraging the community to express themselves by sharing their interests, personal projects, and knowledge that inspired them.

Events sponsored by VOX are a clear reflection of the organization’s ambition to explore alternative ideas. Last year they organized a visit to Aardehuis, a unique project that involves building a community of “Earthships” in an environmentally friendly and sustainable way. VOX also collaborated with SG to host a cartoon workshop that encouraged engineers to explore their creative sides. And on a completely different note, they invited Maarten Keulemans, a science journalist and former editor at Delta, to talk about the predicted 2012 Mayan Apocalypse.

According to Hooft, “VOX Delft is an initiative from different faculties and cultures that wants people to challenge themselves and each other and keep an open mind.” He also said that they expect the community to actively share knowledge to create more than just a passive learning system. “Education of the future is more about being proactive, being fun, engaging, and organic.”

The board of VOX is comprised solely of students and they are hoping the future will bring greater participation from the international community on both the board and general membership. They will be hosting a General Assembly on February 12 to discuss ideas for the direction of VOX as it moves forward.
