Over the course of the next three years, 58 positions will cut at the University Corporate Office. Thirty of these positions will become redundant, while the rest of the job losses will occur through natural labour turnover. Owing to the university-wide revaluation process, each division must cut costs. Marketing and communication for example will use the internet instead of attending fairs to recruit international students.      

Shell prize
BSc student in molecular science & technology, Aletta Kaas, has won the Shell Bachelor Prize 2010 for her research entitled ‘Fuel out of water, light and rust’. She worked on a technology to produce hydrogen through photo electrolysis, using nanothreads of iron oxide as a catalyst. MSc student Remco Addink won the Shell Master Prize 2010 for his sustainable energy technology research project entitled ‘Thermomagnetic Generator- the design and construction of a prototype’.

Immigrants rising
Statistic Netherlands (CBS) latest figures reveal that last year a record number of immigrants relocated to the Netherlands. In 2010, 150,000 people came to live in the country, which are 3,000 more people than in 2009. The majority of these immigrants came from other EU countries. Meanwhile, 118,000 people emigrated from the Netherlands in 2010, or 6,000 more people than left in 2009. The total population of the Netherlands now stands at 16.7 million.

Top research
The faculty of Technology, Policy and Management (TPM) scores very high in a recently published QANU research review. The research group next generation infrastructures even scored 5 out of 5 maximum points. The review committee states it ‘has never seen a research programme as impressive as this programme in terms of quality, productivity and outreach’. The other four TBM research groups also performed well. The committee considers it prudent, however, to focus more attention on PhD students, as their success rate is low. TPM dean, Theo Toonen, agrees and points out that TU Delft is starting a Graduate School to tackle this problem.

Monument
TU Delft’s Sports Centre is facing some problems now that the local authorities have stated their intention of registering the centre’s building as a municipal monument. That status has put on hold the necessary rebuilding works, states Raymond Browne, head of the Sports Centre. The 12 new changing rooms built last year are still only accessible from outside. Moreover, since the fitness room was expanded, passing from one side to the other within the centre is only possible via the Sports Café. And there is too little storage space. TU Delft will now study how these problems can be solved in a manner befitting the future monumental status of the building.

De achterklap van ‘Spaghetti Spoetnik’ belooft weinig goeds. ‘Bitterzoete roman over seks, macht en sterrenkunde’ staat er in grote letters. Oei. De relatie tussen Silke en Thomas wordt beschreven als ‘een ontroerend maar meedogenloos spel van aantrekken en afstoten.’ Het klinkt als het zoveelste clichématige boek over een jongen, een meisje en een relatie die niet wil lukken.
En dat is jammer, want ‘Spaghetti Spoetnik’ is een goed geschreven debuutroman met aandoenlijke personages en een prima verhaal. Thomas is een nerd, maar wel een aardige nerd. Silke is een moeilijk meisje, zonder irritant te zijn. Het verloop van hun relatie wordt vlot verteld, zonder overbodige terzijdes, met een mooi decor aan personages en kleine gebeurtenissen.
Thomas ontmoet Silke als ze voor zijn neus van haar fiets valt. Hij helpt haar naar het ziekenhuis en laat daarna bij haar fiets een briefje achter met zijn naam en nummer. Ruim een maand later belt Silke hem eindelijk eens. Een half uur later komt ze op theevisite. Gaandeweg ontwikkelt zich een merkwaardige relatie – zonder seks. Is Thomas voor Silke een soort broer (de gevreesde positie voor elke vriendelijke bètajongen)? Of is er iets anders aan de hand?
Dat Tonie Mudde goed kan schrijven is geen verrassing. Hij begon ooit als student-verslaggever bij Delta en werkt vanaf de oprichting bij populair-wetenschappelijk tijdschrift Quest. Met collega Rik Kuiper maakte hij twee vrolijke boekjes vol wetenschappelijk verantwoorde tips als ‘Kijk niet naar mooie vrouwen (als je nog moet nadenken)’. Verrassend is wel dat Mudde zo goed uit de voeten kan met fictie. Je wilt ‘Spaghetti Spoetnik’ in een ruk uitlezen.

Tussen Thomas en Silke wordt weinig uitgesproken. In veel jongen-meisje-romans zit je als lezer dan je ergernis te verbijten en wil je de hoofdpersonen toeschreeuwen dat ze eens iets moeten dóen. Hier niet. Thomas en Silke zijn op hun manier lief voor elkaar. Silke studeert fotografie en Thomas poseert voor haar camera obscura-project. Silke kan Thomas niet helpen met zijn onderzoek, maar leeft wel met hem mee. Als Thomas op zijn werk naar de lancering van een satelliet kijkt, krijgt hij een sms-je van Silke: “Woehoe! Volgende keer moeten we ernaartoe.” De op de achterklap beloofde seks, macht en sterrenkunde komen voorbij. Mooi, schrijnend en zonder clichés.
De bijpersonages zijn trefzeker neergezet. Zoals Thomas’ enthousiaste kamergenoot Di Stefano die zijn onderzoek opzij zet voor een citroenstamper met een haakje om hem aan het glas te hangen. Of Thomas’ moeder die haar migraine probeert te bedwingen door nauwgezet in een schriftje bij te houden wat ze allemaal doet. Krijgt ze een aanval als ze het woord ‘migraine’ zegt? Eigenlijk is ze net als haar zoon wanhopig op zoek naar patronen.
Mudde, die luchtvaart- en ruimtevaarttechniek studeerde, weet ook de typische nerdhumor goed te vatten. Thomas krijgt van zijn Amerikaanse begeleider bijvoorbeeld een mailtje ‘If you can read this… You’re not working on your code.’ Zijn wetenschapsjournalistieke achtergrond verraadt zich als hij het werk van Thomas uitlegt: ‘…míjn stap, was het in kaart brengen van de atmosfeer van die verre planeten. Daarvoor gebruikte ik een optische truc. Zoals een bal anders stuitert op steen dan op gras, zo ketst het licht anders af op waterdamp dan op stikstof. Door te kijken hoe een exoplaneet het invallende licht van de dichtstbijzijnde ster reflecteert, probeer ik af te leiden welke gassen er in de atmosfeer aanwezig zijn.’ Helder. Al zegt Silke na deze uitleg fijntjes dat het natuurlijk vooral belangrijk is dat hij het zelf snapt.

De eerste bladzijde van ‘Spaghetti Spoetnik’ wordt trouwens in 2011 de ruimte in geschoten. Maar dat soort poespas heeft dit boek net zo min nodig als die malle achterflap.
