Ecomarathon

Less fast, but incredibly economic is the Ecorunner3 – the hydrogen car under construction for the 27th edition of the Shell eco-marathon. This super slick, ultra-light, cigar-shaped vehicle is expected to drive 3,000 kilometres on the equivalent of 1 litre of fuel. That is 25 percent more than its prize-winning predecessor Ecorunner2 (Dutch best competitor 2010). The current world record by Polytechnic Nantes (France) is 4,896 kilometres per litre.

Electro bike

Over the last five years sales of electro bikes in the Netherlands have tripled to 150,000 per year. Electro bikes (or e-bikes) support electrical power pedalling up to 25 kilometres per hour and require no license. Municipalities from the The Hague region (‘Stadsgewest Haaglanden’) wanted to know if e-bikes can help to reduce traffic congestion by, for instance, providing an alternative for commuters. Jeroen Loijen (Civil Engineering and Geosciences) wrote his Master’s thesis on the subject. He discovered that most e-bike owners are elderly citizens living outside the urban centres who use the bikes primarily for recreational purposes. Loijen states that commuting traffic by e-bike is growing, however, but that the effect on mobility is not yet clear. E-bike commuting, he proposes, can best be stimulated by corporate pilot projects. Such pilots have been successful thus far elsewhere in encouraging commuters to switch from cars to e-bikes.

Nuclear storage

The Dutch province of Brabant has asked Professor Theo Olsthoorn to explore the effects of underground nuclear storage in Belgium. Prof. Olsthoorn works as a lecturer and researcher at the faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences’ water resources section. Belgium has well-developed plans to store nuclear waste in 250 metre deep clay layers. The adjacent province of Brabant fears radioactive contamination of its drinking water.

Roept het woord circus iets oubolligs op, Tom Tom Crew is alles behalve dat. Op het podium lijken de acrobaten in niets op de standaard trapezeartiesten, maar eigenlijk gewoon een groep – ongelooflijk getalenteerde – Australische straatschoffies. Snoeiharde beats, hiphop en halsbrekende acrobatiek; de leden van Tom Tom Crew mixen het allemaal tot een show die de zaal uitknalt. Niet in de minste plaats dankzij percussionist Ben Walsh, letterlijk het kloppende hart van de groep. Op zelfgemaakte stellages van olievaten, kabels en wat ook verder maar kabaal maakt, zet hij een spektakel neer dat wel iets weg heeft van groepen als Mayumana en Slagerij van Kampen.

Tom Tom Crew ziet zichzelf trouwens niet alleen als het circus van de toekomst, maar ook als nieuwe generatie hiphoppers. Een logische combi, volgens creatief directeur Scott Maidment. “De explosiviteit van de acrobaten kan alleen maar worden geëvenaard door de power van hiphopbeats.” Minstens zo belangrijk in de show zijn dan ook mix-master Sampology (Sam Poggioli, een grootheid in de Australische dj-scene) en beatbox-wereldkampioen Tom Thum. Indrukwekkend en inspirerend. Niet voor niets is de show in Theater De Veste komende woensdag al uitverkocht, maar grijp deze kans aan om te reserveren voor één van de voorstellingen in de buurt. Rennen!
