There’s an app for that

Do you worry about who’s watching your online activity? TU Delft Ph.D. student Edgar Garcia does. He values his privacy so much so that he asked us to use a pseudonym for this article.

“I like to have a way to protect my communications from the prying eyes of certain organisations and people,” he says. With Orbot, a free app for Android, he can worry a little less. The app encrypts your internet activity and then bounces it through a series of computers around the world.  According to their website, Orbot can “defend against a form of network surveillance that threatens personal freedom and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and state security known as traffic analysis.” Using Orbot to surf the web, chat, Tweet and use apps takes a little longer, but it might be worth the wait to stay private.
