Come on, quit!

These two enormous cigarettes were inflated on the first floor of Civil Engineering, last Monday. The convenience bureau FM&TLO organised the action to bring the new smoking policy to the attention of students and employees. For some time now, smoking is taboo in public areas. It’s only allowed in studies when nobody objects. For incurable smokers, a special smoking room will be installed soon in the canteen on the sixth floor.

Freelance mechanic Kees Saas (40, on the left) and principal mechanic Piet Nouwen (50) have come all the way from Weert, near Eindhoven, to work for their awning company ‘Delta Nederland’. They’re busy assembling the sun blinds on the sixth floor of Civil Engineering. This floor has recently been renovated. By accident, the demolition contractors broke the storage bin in which the sun blinds hang. Afraid of heights? “You shouldn’t be, in this trade.”

Anton Verdijk (27) from Vlaardingen has mixed feelings while demolishing the beautiful old cupboard in an old study at Mechanical Engineering, of which only the remains are left to be seen now. Actually Verdijk is a shipbuilder by profession but he works as a demolition contractor because things aren’t going well in that line of business.

Crane operator Jan Hensen (60), from Rijswijk, stands on the remains of the central workshop of Mechanical Engineering. With his crane he’s pulling iron out of concrete. Afterwards, the concrete will be broken up into small pieces in a machine which can’t withstand iron. The rubble shall be used as base for new motorways.

Living on yourself (6)

Jolijn Schoofs lives in the Zuiderstraat. The decoration of the toilet has been specially seen to. After a real Delfts Blue plate and a sample pot found their destination in the smallest room of the house, Schoof and her roommates decided to decorate the whole toilet in this fashion. They collected a pile of fake-blue trash at fleamarkets and even a few old Frisian skates were hung from the walls. They even discovered Delfts Blue adhesive plastic with the dimensions of bathroom tiles. The pride of the collection is a tile of the Dutch bathroom equipment manufacturer, Sphinx, which says (in old Dutch referring to old toilets): “When the humane is beneath you, still you’ll be sitting on a shelf with a hole within.”
