CDA wants to curb rise in tuition fees
Dutch political party CDA is asking minister Dijkgraaf to curb higher education tuition fees, as inflation is believed to be lower than official figures indicate.
CDA has submitted written questions regarding an article written by HOP. It states that tuition fees would actually have to rise less quickly than currently announced. This is because statistics agency CBS is going to adjust the calculation of inflation.
Tuition fees (now 2,209 euros) increase with inflation every year. Next year, 105 euros will be added. This was initially supposed to be even more (212 euros), but minister Dijkgraaf adjusted the regulation to dampen outliers.
However, CBS wants to adjust the calculation of inflation. Rapidly rising energy prices will then have less influence on the ‘consumer price index’, as the Statistics Netherlands table of inflation figures is called. According to that new calculation, which is still being worked out, tuition fees would actually only have to rise by 67-85 euros. (HOP, BB)
