Cutbacks worth millions off the table
A proposed cutback of EUR 149 million on secondary and tertiary education was scrapped. On Thursday, a majority in the House of Representatives supported D66’s amendment entailing corona support to students not going at the cost of secondary and tertiary education. Only VVD, CDA and PVV voted against.
Through the Nationaal Programma Onderwijs (NPO, national education programme), the Cabinet will pay out EUR 8.5 billion in corona support to education over the next 2.5 years. However, payment for extra study financing and public transport claims will only be introduced after 2.5 years. The Voorjaarsnota (government’s spring budget) thus reveals that this is the reason that the Cabinet ‘parked’ a reduction of EUR 149 million on the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science budget.
According to Minister Van Engelshoven, nobody had intended to actually economise on secondary and tertiary education, and the ‘technicality of adding’ the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science’s budget to the next Government formation body could be repaired. But the educational institutions and a part of the House of Representatives did not trust this and this led to the D66 amendment being accepted.
