Civil engineering master’s student Sophie Broere just finished doing a board year for Dispuut Water & Environment. And the experience was way better than she expected.
“During the first year of my master’s they asked me to be part of the board and I thought it sounded like a good idea. The atmosphere in the department is really different than my experience during my bachelor’s. It’s a small group of students and the professor so you can ask questions, and they know you by name. I was quite surprised.
Water management
I was the commissioner of education for water management, so I was responsible for doing evaluations of courses and talking to professors and students. You have to find out what they think about the courses to try and review and improve education. Unlike some other boards where you take time off from studying, this board is something you do while you are studying.
Social events
The experience was better than I expected. It’s just kind of a random group of people, but in the end, it turned out to be really nice. You do a lot of things together like organising social events, dinners, weekly meetings. When you’re new to TU Delft, both Dutch and international students, you join the board and you instantly have a group to hang out with, to ask questions to, to come to for help. The community is quite large, but with the board you form really close relationships.
Sad
I’m kind of sad it’s over now because you can only do it for one year. But being a part of this experience really changed my outlook for the future. I like it here so much that now I’m considering doing a PhD.”
