Lectures notes on the BlackboardLectures notes are often late. A course has started, but students don’t have the required lecture notes, often because of a delay at the printers.

Student organisation Aag has a pragmatic solution for a problem that affects all faculties: If professors can’t deliver lecture notes to students on time, they can post them on a digital Blackboard. Using a password, students can then download the required information. Aag will ‘monitor’ whether tardy professors are indeed posting their ‘delayed’ lecture notes on the Blackboard. The university however has yet to decide if all faculties will be required to use the Blackboard.

Underground building prize for Houben

Prof. Francine Houben, who designed the TU library, has received the Schreuders prize for her underground extension of an office building in Utrecht. The jury appreciated the way the underground offices are situated in the garden of the office building, allowing sunlight to enter the building’s underground section. The design, by Houben’s architect office, Mecanoo, was born out of necessity, as expanding the building above the ground was impossible, as Utrecht’s cityscape is protected.

Philips wants liberalized rules for foreign employees

Dutch multinational Philips wants the Dutch government to liberalize the rules for allowing employees with an engineering degree to work in the Netherlands. Currently ten percent of Philips’ employees with a higher education come from abroad. Philips believes it will need more foreign engineers in future.
