,Hundred million

The Dutch ministry of education has earmarked hundred million euro over five years for scientific education and research in physics and chemistry. Many physics and chemistry faculties are experiencing drops in student enrollment numbers and facing cost-cutting measures, yet these disciplines are vital for industry, said Ronald Plasterk, the education minister. Plasterk has therefore allocated 20 million euro to be spent annually on various physics and chemistry education schemes from 2011 to 2016.

,Google project

In 2008, two Delft PhD candidates, Jelmer van Ast and Mathieu Gerard, submitted an idea to Google’s ‘Project 10 to the 100’, which had asked for ideas about how to use the internet to help as many people as possible. Van Ast and Gerard recognized elements of their idea in one of the sixteen ‘big ideas’ that Google has shortlisted from the 150.000 submissions received. Although Google never explicitly confirmed that its ‘Make educational content available online for free’ idea was based on the two PhD students’ idea, which was called ‘the Open and Free University’ and described a Wikipedia-style website where teachers could publish their teaching materials, Google has said this ‘big idea’ for free education is based on various similar suggestions, such as the one submitted by Van Ast and Gerard. The winner will be announced shortly on the ‘project 10 to the 100’ website. Van Ast: “We hope many people voted for ‘our’ idea, because it will enable clever students living in developing countries to also participate in good university-level education.”

,Ranking (1)

TU Delft was ranked 15th on the Times Higher Education Supplement’s (THE) list of the best technological universities in the world. “We are among the 15 best universities of technology in the world and we are the highest ranked TU in the Netherlands, which of course is all wonderful news,” said TU Delft’s president, Dirk Jan van den Berg. ”Moreover, all of us in the Netherlands can be very proud of the quality of our university educational programs.” The THE list is a highly respected international ranking system, which evaluates the quality of education and research offered at technological universities around the world. The top three universities on this year’s list were MIT, the University of California (Berkeley), and Stanford. TU Delft’s IDEA League partner, ETH Zurich, was ranked 10th.

TU Delft’s ranking in the annual Times Higher Education Supplements (THES) ranking of Global Top 200 best universities in the world fell from 78th place last year to 83rd place this year. In the country ranking, the Netherlands excelled, sharing third place with Canada and Japan. The United States and Great Britain had the most universities on the list, 54 and 29 respectively. The Netherlands had 11 universities ranked in the top 200, with four Dutch universities ranking in the top 100, including the University of Amsterdam (49th), the highest ranked Dutch university. The top three all-around best universities remained unchanged from last year: Harvard University (1st), the University of Cambridge (2nd) and Yale University (3rd).
