Fee hikesNon-EU students will suffer from the Dutch government’s efforts to save money. The government plans to raise tuition fees for non-EU students at the start of the 2005-06 academic year.
Currently, foreign students at TU Delft pay approximately 8,000 euros per year. TU Rector Fokkema has stated that this figure will rise sharply, and that consequently the number of foreign students enrolling at TU Delft will dramatically decline. Presently in the Netherlands, non-EU students pay the highest tuition fees at the University of Leiden (approx. 10,000 euro annually). The government argues however that the quality of the education, and not low tuition fees, should be what attracts foreign students to study in the Netherlands. Internationally orientated universities like Wageningen and Delft are troubled by the cutbacks, however. The VSNU (National Association of Dutch Universities) is not enthusiastic, either. The VSNU doesn’t plan to issue guidelines to the universities regarding the college fees they should charge to non-EU students. ”That all depends on how badly they need these students and how they want to position themselves,” a VSNU spokesperson said.

Students hoping to graduate cum laude are advised to switch to cola after just two beers. Recent research by PhD Suzanne Bijl (University of Utrecht) found that drinking more than 15 glasses of an alcoholic beverage a week produces discernible negative effects. That drinking excessively is dangerous is well-known, but Bijl’s research shows that ‘social drinking’ can also lead to changes in the way our brains’ function. But don’t cry in your beer: drinking two beers a day is safe and is probably even good for your heart.
