Russian spy arrested at Norwegian university

A Russian spy posing as a Brazilian scientist at a Norwegian university was arrested in October. He collected sensitive military information in the Arctic. The man will be deported from the country, reports The Guardian

The justice ministry’s ruling states that, according to the Norwegian security service, he had a secret order from the Russian government to gather information about military activities and the researchers who mapped them. He also allegedly entered Norway with fake Brazilian papers. The Russian’s lawyer denies the allegations and says his client “does not understand anything about the accusations”.

The Russian had worked at the faculty of security studies at the University of Tromsø since December. Professor Gunhild Hoogensen Gjørv had appointed him and tells The Guardian. “We ourselves have now become part of what we are always researching, which is threats to national security.” (HOP, PvT)
