Setting goals for 2013

What you get done next year depends on how densely you packed your list of New Year’s Resolutions and how quickly you can get to work on them. The good news for all TU Delft students, faculty and staff is that there are many resources available to help you along your way.

Is getting into shape at the top of your list? “Improving my fitness level and losing weight are my number one priorities in 2013”, said former TU student Nadia Adams. If you are like Nadia Adams, there are plenty of options for getting fit. For team sports you can head on over to the TU Delft Sports Centre. It is home to 40 sports clubs including volleyball and rugby, tennis and baseball and even fencing and karate.

If competitive sports are not for you, you could take one of the dance or fitness classes. For the more adventurous, there are even weekly belly dancing and salsa lessons through the Culture Centre. You don’t even have to worry about language barriers. According to the Sports Centre, if just one person in the class doesn’t speak Dutch, the whole class will be taught in English. The Culture Centre offers more than fitness courses. You can take a whole range of classes, from photography to cooking. If you’ve secretly wanted to learn to play the saxophone or the drums, they also offer music course.

Registration runs until February 24th and you can see the full list of courses on their website.

Dutch classes

However, if you plan to stay in the Netherlands for more than a few months, learning Dutch might be high on your list. The Centre for Languages and Academic Skills uses the world-renowned ‘Delftse Method’ to teach day and evening Dutch classes. Intensive NT-2 prep classes start on January 14th and beginning and intermediate evening courses start in early February. If you are looking for something a bit more basic, you could join one of the International Neighbor Group Dutch classes. These 10 lesson courses help build a basic Dutch vocabulary while teaching about Dutch culture and society.

For many of you, the focus of 2013 will be on finding a job or internship. You can book a one-on-one appointment with the TU Delft Career Centre staff and outline the best action plan to help you achieve your goals. The knowledgeable staff is available to guide you through the job search process and direct you to the tools and training you need.

Do not let 2013 be another year in which you forget your resolutions. Take advantage of these services and start accomplishing your goals.
