Student housing director to address room shortage

The Dutch Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations has appointed a national ‘Student Housing Director’. The director – Ardin Mourik, is tasked with solving the acute shortage of student rooms, which means adding 60.000 affordable student units by 2030.

The figure of 60.000 comes from the National Student Housing Action Plan presented in September 2022 by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the Ministry of the Interior and the social student housing association Kences, among others. The appointment of a director was one of the agreements included in this action plan.

“The student housing director will monitor the progress of building projects at multiple levels of government, remove obstacles where possible and address those responsible for progress,” Kences writes in a press release. Mourik should also start ensuring more non-self-contained student rooms. How exactly he will do that is not yet clear. (AdB)
