Third honorary doctorate for virologist Van Ranst

The Belgian virologist Marc van Ranst will receive a third honorary doctorate in the Netherlands. After Leiden University and Free University Amsterdam, Radboud University Nijmegen will follow in October.

The Leuven professor advised the Belgian government on corona measures and fought tirelessly against disinformation. He faced many threats and had to go into hiding with his family when a heavily armed, far-right professional soldier wanted to kill him. The extremist was not found despite a manhunt (and was later found dead in a forest).

Yet Van Ranst usually sounds laconic and witty. About the soldier, who had stood in his street, he told NRC newspaper: “I don’t know what he was up to, but someone with a bazooka will not stand there for a friendly chat.” (HOP, BB)
