For those with friends and family visiting from abroad, or for the busy student who finally has free time to relax, the holiday’s are a great time to check out some of the historical buildings of this medieval Dutch town. A Delft must-see is the Prinsenhof, where Willem van Oranje, the first Dutch monarch, was assassinated in 1584. The original bullet holes in the staircase walls mark this bloody day in Dutch history. For background info (in English) and photos of beautiful Delft places, see www.monument.delft.nl. Foreigners from warm climates especially should spend a holiday day learning the Dutchman%s favourite winter sport: ice-skating. Until January 12th, you can skate at the Doelenplein for only 3.50 euro per day, or 7.50 euro a day if you need to rent skates.

If you%d like to escape Delft and learn how to country line dance, (without having to go to Texas), head for the ‘Western Experience’ at Den Haag’s Darling Expo center on December 26th. This event is the biggest Country & Western happening in the Netherlands. Besides learning country dancing, you can also buy Western clothes, jewellery, boots and listen to live country music. Entry costs 8 euro. See www.darlingexpo.nl
